Crybaby Crochet by Elsie

Crybaby Crochet’s story began two years ago when I was gifted my beloved great-grandmother’s crochet hooks. With a skein of yarn in a repulsive shade of yellow, I learned to crochet simple stitches into a very questionable dishcloth. After that, I decided I would make a blanket - and nearly quit crocheting entirely (which I soon learned is a cannon event for crocheters). Teaching myself to crochet proved to be extremely difficult when it came to the bare bones, with most beginner video tutorials saying to “weave in the ends” or “magic circle” without showing how the hell they do either of those things. Most of the basics I learned were through overwhelmingly supportive Facebook groups and Reddit posts, but finding one source for beginner tips - let alone videos with entire beginner projects other than plushies - was nearly impossible. Oddly enough, I finally discovered I learned best through micro crochet , even despite every resource telling me I would drive myself insane trying to start there. While I enjoy completing large projects from time to time as well, micro crochet is what I love most, and I am thrilled to be able to share it with you!

Behind the Name

One of the most common questions I’ve received is, “Why the name Crybaby Crochet? Why not choose something more…positive?” To which I reply, “It is positive”, but then say no more.

In reality, the name stems from years of my generation - generation Z - being referred to as ‘snowflakes’, ‘crybabies’, and ‘overly sensitive’, but only ‘crybaby’ alliterates with ‘crochet’. Over the past few years, I have been beyond proud to witness fellow ‘crybabies’ contributing so much to their communities and standing up for human rights across the globe. While we all do our part in small ways, I wanted to create Crybaby Crochet on a foundation of community and charity. Along with the giving page you are able to donate to if you so choose, at times profits from rotating products will be donated to indicated groups and charities such as Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), The Trevor Project, and Habitat for Humanity.

I personally want to thank Great-Grandma L., Grandma M., my mother (pictured), and my godmother for inspiring generations of people to love and live loudly. Your collective dedication to community and self-expression have had a lasting impact on myself as well as countless others. Thank you for encouraging myself and others to raise our voices for all, and teaching us the beauty in strength.
